GOLF TIPS:

HOW TO CORRECT YOUR SLICE: Most golfers (men and women alike) tend to hit a slice. The most common cause of a slice is a lack of clubface rotation through the ball at impact. This opening or holding back of the clubface puts a clockwise rotation on the ball and causes the sometimes-dramatic curve to the right. To correct your slice you first must learn to hit the anti-slice (a.k.a. a hook). Feel the toe of the club pass the heel through impact and the ball will move from right to left. An excellent drill to feel this release of the club-head and your arms is to set up as if the ball were teed up three feet off the ground. Make a few swooshing swings and begin to sense how your right arm crosses over the left naturally. Gradually lower the bottom of the swing until you are making swings at ground height. If you can get this rotational swing to happen through the ball, Kiss Your Slice Goodbye!

CORRECTING YOUR FEAR OF BUNKER SHOTS: Most high handicappers have an ingrained fear of bunkers shots. Here are a few simple tips to alleviate stress and keep things simple. Take a traditional open stance but instead of playing the ball off of your left heel, move the ball forward slightly. This will promote a shallower swing and allow for more room to maneuver the club through the sand. Remember to always accelerate through the ball and not just dig the club head into the bunker. Try this simple tip and you'll find how easy a bunker shot can be.

CONSISTENCY WITH MEDIUM TO LONG GREENSIDE BUNKER SHOTS: How do you become more consistent on your medium to long greenside bunker shots? Set up with a square stance with most of your weight forward and the ball off your front foot. Take the club straight up on your backswing and swing through in a fluid motion. The combination of the square stance and the smooth swing will result in a lower trajectory shot that places less spin on the ball. This will allow the ball to run out towards the pin without that pesky inconsistent spin.

GETTING THE MOST OF YOUR PRE-SHOT ROUTINE: The best way to get the most out of your pre-shot routine is to start on the driving range during your warm up. Stand directly behind your ball focusing on your target then walk to your ball; set the club directly at your target first, then set your feet (at this point your shoulders and feet should be just left of your target) and get comfortable. This assures that your alignment is intact. Once you get comfortable with your pre-shot routine, you should implement it prior to every shot you play. If you practice a pre-shot routine especially on the practice tee, you will lower your scores!

CONTROLLING PUTTING DISTANCES: Having Trouble With Controlling Your Putting Distance? Well here is a drill that can help improve your distance control. When on the practice green take five tees and place them at 5, 10, 15, 20, & 25 feet from the hole. Putt five balls from each tee towards the hole and try and make each putt. Remember to try and get each putt to the hole. Use this drill when practicing your putting, not before you play a round of golf.
